HKU DeepTech100+ Cohort 8: briefing on 12 November, check eligibility first

Taking research to market starts with checking the team’s HKU links and company requirements. Applications close at 23:59 on 29 November; support of up to HK$1.39 million depends on the relevant HKSTP programmes and is not guaranteed.

Official information: dates, eligibility and support conditions

Checked on 2 November 2026, HKU TEC and HKSTP’s DeepTech100+ Cohort 8 is accepting applications until 23:59 on Sunday, 29 November. Its briefing is on Thursday, 12 November, 1–2pm, at Tam Wing Fan Innovation Wing Two, Faculty of Engineering, G/F Run Run Shaw Building, HKU; register through the official event page. The person in charge must be an HKU student, staff member, alumnus or affiliated-institution member aged 18+ with valid HKID, or a director of an existing or prospective HKU IP licensee with licensing signed or under negotiation. HKU members must hold at least 20% equity. Unincorporated teams must form a Hong Kong limited company if approved; existing Hong Kong limited companies must be under 24 months old at programme start. Projects need R&D and a commercialisation plan. Eligibility is therefore restricted. The advertised support of up to HK$1.39 million is through applicable HKSTP programmes, subject to selection and conditions, rather than a guaranteed lump sum. HKSTP also ties full Ideation funding to required training and assignments. No reliable original announcement date is shown; this article uses its compilation and checking date. Our practical suggestions

Queensway suggests: test market needs and organise the evidence

Members with research or technology backgrounds can first check their team’s HKU affiliation, intellectual property, equity and incorporation date before deciding whether to attend the briefing. Speak with a potential user about how they currently handle the problem, which step takes the most time, and when they would try a new solution. Put those answers, a prototype and the R&D evidence on one page, then list questions for the organiser. This is a Queensway Business Development learning suggestion; interviews and preparation alone do not establish eligibility or secure funding.

  • Who will be the person in charge, and can we evidence the HKU affiliation, IP and at least 20% equity requirements?
  • Do the incorporation date, R&D and commercialisation plan meet the requirements, and what should we clarify at the 12 November briefing?
  • Which real user need should we test, and who will complete the official application by 23:59 on 29 November?
